It's hard
for me to pass up the chance to own something that matches
my real car so precisely. So when this showed up, I
had to have it. I started trolling on eBay thinking
that would be my best chance to find one. I also found
it listed on Amazon.com but unfortunately it was
"unavailable". That's because it has been discontinued
for some time.
eBay drove
me nuts. There were a variety of different listings
over several months. Some were complete. Others
were missing key parts (like the A/C cord, remote, or box).
Despite these shortcomings, many of them sold for
significant amounts, one for as much as $250.00! When
new this was selling for about $100, give or take a few
bucks.
I decided
that I would have to get one that was complete. The
only thing I was willing do without was the box, though the
packaging is interesting. I sat tight and watched
several come and go and winced at the thought of spending
$250 for what is basically an attractive but no doubt
"cheap" CD clock radio.
Finally
after six months of watching, one came up on eBay. The
seller chose to end the auction during the day during the
week. The listing was properly placed in the
electronics section though it would likely have gotten more
attention in the automotive section. The picture was
one of the small marketing pictures. It started for
$25 with no reserve. Day after day I checked and it
sat there ignored with no bids. How could this be?
Every other one, including the really bad ones got lots of
attention and sold for hefty amounts.
The seller
had a good feedback rating. PayPal was an option.
Shipping wasn't out of line. I concluded it was just a
bad combination of listing choices and maybe karma.
Still, I knew that as sure as ever, there had to be at least
one other person lurking out there waiting for this auction
to end. I decided to be patient and wait too. At
the very end I placed my final bid amount, reluctantly
bidding higher than the highest bid I had ever seen one of
these sell. My reasoning was that this one, listed as
"unopened", was probably the best I would find, and if
anyone else was paying attention and knew the ceiling on
these, could very well trump me. (As it would turn
out, it was NOT "new", not "unopened", and showed signs of
having been used. Notwithstanding, it was still a good
deal.)
As luck
would have it, there WAS someone else watching. And
with only seconds to go, they put down a modest bid.
When I bid, I displaced their high limit and won the auction
with 8 seconds left to go. I got the item, with
shipping, for a tad more than half the new item price.
I would have preferred to get it for the starting bid amount
but I was still thrilled. I am sure the under-bidder
was frustrated to see that the winner got it for a dollar
more than the highest they were willing to go...
