Grease 'N Go - 4/26/02
I came to
realize that it was probably time to refresh the fluids in the Jeep, in
preparation for another season of 'wheeling. I had not changed the
differential or transmission fluids ever. After a year of driving
through mud and water I wanted to make sure that I wasn't lubricating my
gears with mud and water...
My friend Carl likes the local Grease 'N Go so one day on the way home from work I decided to tag along with him and have all my fluids changed. We got in line at the Grease 'N Go, and signed up for the service. They took the Jeep in to their bay, complete with an underground pit. There, they quickly drained off the old fluids, remove the filter, and checked various related mechanical components. Then they refilled the engine, transmission and transfer case, front and rear end differentials, and all the grease zerks. Since I got "the works", they vacuumed the Jeep and gave me a "Manager's Special" - a $23 discount on the services. All the old fluids came out of the Jeep water and mud-free so that was good news. I didn't really expect anything less but apparently some people have not been as fortunate. I generally do avoid immersing my chassis in water and mud but sometimes it is unavoidable. If you are a mud puppy, you may want to be a more frequent visitor to places like this. I chose to have someone else do the work because I have not found a vacuum device for removing the fluids from the transfer case and differentials, and did not feel like fooling with diff covers and plugs. I could have saved money but this was so fast and clean, it was worth it. In fact it was so easy that I plan to go back as often as necessary! |
