Prologue
The location for our next campout
came up at the meeting. A few choices were discussed but
everyone liked the idea of revisiting King Trees. I got in
touch with Bill and soon we had confirmed our stay
at the same campsite as
the first time. Our plans consisted of setting up
camp, taking a hike on Saturday, and the usual campout stuff
(meals, advancement, games).
I had another activity to attend
Friday evening, and a baseball game for Tom on Saturday.
So our stay was going to be modified. Rather than meet the
group at the usual place and time I went in early and got our
tent set up, and cached the food that we got as part of Tom's
Head Cook assignment.

The rest of the troop drove in on Friday
evening, got camp set, and then spent some time finding the food
I had staged. They made dinner that consisted of Hot Dogs
and rolls. Later in the evening, Ted, Tom and I arrived to
find the camp ready for bed. Alex gave the weather report
that predicted rain off and on for the weekend. Though
it's not in anyone's plans to have rain on a campout, we've
gotten pretty good at having fun no matter what. The tent
is well set for rain, and the pop-up fly that we got last year
further enhances our options and convenience during rain so we
didn't mind the possibility of getting a little wet.
Saturday
Saturday started out wet. The hike
was postponed in favor of activities that could be done closer
to camp.
Ted woke early and rousted out the
breakfast crew. Pretty soon we were enjoying pancakes and
sausage breakfast cooked by the boys and made better by Mr.
Butler's great method for keeping the prepared food warm so that
we could all eat together.
After breakfast I took a walk and made
some images.
Alex did a good job of getting the kids
busy with Fire Starting training under the dinner shelter.
Mr. Butler covered some advancement.
Meanwhile the older patrol went on a
little excursion...
After the older patrol returned to
announce the "discovery" of interest rock formations, the rest
of the camp set out to see for themselves.
Once there we had some axe training.
After a while we went back to camp and
had lunch.
We had a choice of cold-cuts or PB&J,
and chips, with fruits for desert. Then the boys went to
play baseball for a while. Tom came back at the appointed
time and we went to his first baseball game of the season.
When we returned, dinner was over and it
was dark. We spent a few minutes visiting and then hit the
tents. It rained off and on all night but we had no
troubles staying dry.
Sunday Morning
Breakfast started a little later than
Saturday and consisted of egg omelets with some sausage and
cheese, with ham. While breakfast water was boiling I took
a walk and made some images.
After breakfast we took down camp and
got ready to leave. Then Mr. Butler sat everyone down and
reviewed the weekend, asking each of us to share our "Rose,
thorn, and bud". This was a great way to find out what
parts of the weekend were popular, (or not) and to cover some
lessons learned. Overall, I think most had a great weekend
in spite of the rain.
By 12:30 we were on the road back to the
meeting place where the kids rejoined their families! On
the way out I could not resist make a few more images of the
cloud formations!
After we got home we took a ride to have
a little lunch. I stopped on the way home to make some
images. A very long and satisfying weekend!
