Day One

Prologue

Every year the call goes out for people to volunteer to be trail guides at Camp Jeep.  People sign up and then a lottery is held to sort the list into order so that everyone gets a chance to be a guide.  A large number of people are put on the guide list and the remainder are listed as alternates.

In the past, most, if not all of the alternates end up being guides due to the volume of attendees and jobs to be worked.  I was seeded 32nd and guaranteed a guide slot.  My assignments were to work the sign-up tent on Thursday, Trail E on Friday at 7am and Trail I on Saturday at 7am.  This suited me well owing to the fact that my whole family was coming along.  I would be able to have most of the day on Thursday to see the event area, then get my trail assignments out of the way early on Friday and Saturday.

July 13, 2004 - Drive Down to Lynchburg

One of the requirements of trail guides is to participate in the pre-runs.  I attended the June 12 run and ran Trail E with Jason and Jesse and a few others.  I didn't run Trail I, but having run it several times in the past, and wasn't worried about it.  The final pre-run to be completed was scheduled for noon on July 14, so I got packed on the 13th and drove down to Lynchburg where we checked in to the hotel and basically hit the sack.
