Thursday, March 27, 2008 - White Point, Meeting Street, Angel Oak, Morris Island Light, Folly Beach, Shopping

Wow! Funny how time flies when you're having fun.  This would be our last day in Charleston.  We had to make it count.  (Famous Last Words).  Again with the vacation attitude, we left the hotel at 10:00 AM.  Today we opted to try something different for breakfast so I suggested we try something downtown on the way to our days activities.  So we went to the King Street area and walked until we found a nice little place, and had breakfast at Bruegger's - arriving at 10:15 and leaving at 10:40AM.

Maria wanted to check out the CupCake shop so we stopped by and got some cupcakes for "dessert" (for breakfast?).  There was a prohibition against taking pictures in the shop so we took pictures outside.  (Must be a fear of cameras with the new "smell-a-vision" feature.  The cupcakes were OK.

Meeting Street

We got in the Commander and drove down Meeting Street to White Point, then back up to Courthouse Square, parking around 11:30AM for our walk to White Point as the parking in the area is all reserved for residents with parking permits.  That was OK as it gave us a chance to walk Meeting Street and admire the buildings and landscapes.  The pictures speak for themselves - the weather was outstanding, the properties uniformly beautiful.

White Point

We reached the park at about 11:50PM.  It had been a nice walk so far.  We took a short break.

We sought and found the White Point Geocache around 12:10PM.  It was the geodetic survey marker located at the point,

While we were there we photographed some people and they in turn photographed us.

Maria took a walk and I took a break while Tom climbed all over one of the cannons.

Meeting Street

We hung out until 12:37PM and then started walking back up Meeting Street.  Again, not much to say about the beautiful buildings all along the way - the pictures cover it nicely!

We got back to Courthouse Square around 1:08PM.  From there we located Rainbow "Row" and drove along it before heading out to the next stop on our tour.

Angel Oak

We reached Angel Oak about 1:50PM.  We found it in a small park with lots of picnic tables.  Tom and I made a side trip to locate a geocache.

The only way to get a sense of the size of this tree is to see something next to it.  This tree is huge!  Not so much tall as wide!

Lastly we checked out Gift Shop and then left for Kiawah Island at about 2:26PM.

Kiawah Beach

We thought we'd go to Kiawah Island and spend some time on the beach.  Along the way we stopped for Lunch, arriving at 2:44PM at  Fischer's Sports Pub and Grill in the Bohicket Marina.

Maria fell in love with the split window VW that was outside.

We had a nice lunch, leaving at 3:50PM.  We arrived at the Kiawah Island gate at about 3:55PM and learned (as we should have known from travel materials) that it is a closed community.  We backtracked to go to Folly Beach area instead.

Folly Beach

Reached area at about 4:37PM.  Drove out to Lighthouse Inlet, parking near Sumter Drive just before gated entrance.  We hiked out past former Loran Coast Guard station to the point.  Got there about 5:10PM.  I took credit for the Someday My Prince Will Come geocache.  There's an interesting story of how this lighthouse is being preserved by a group raising money and contracting the preservation work, which can be seen in the photo below.  This marks my 100th geocache!

Shopping

After our long day, we still somehow managed to muster up the energy to go to the North Charleston shopping center (Center Point) at 7:03PM and do some shopping.  The kids got sneakers and WebKins and I got toys.  I think Maria bought some stuff too.  After the shopping I saw a pretty sky so made some images.  Even though it was just a shopping center, I still liked the effect.

Next I tried to get gas at Sam's and found my membership card had expired the day before, so renewed it and then found they didn't sell mid-grade fuel...  Getting fuel would have to wait until Friday before we left.

Went to dinner at FATZ around 8:24, finished around 9:23PM.  It was pretty good.

We got back to the hotel around 9:30PM and called it a night.  Another chock-full day!
